Overall Purpose of the Job
Berita Harian is seeking a versatile and experienced Visual Journalist who can bring stories to life through compelling visual storytelling, including illustrations, animated visuals, data-driven graphics, and short-form video content. We’re seeking someone who can work independently, identify visual angles in news and features, and has a strong understanding of the Malay-speaking audience. You’ll work closely with editors and reporters, but you’ll also be expected to drive your visual narratives and pitch creative ideas.
Key Responsibilities
The scope of responsibilities includes the following:
- Conceptualise, create and produce illustrations, infographics, motion graphics, and short-form videos for Berita Harian’s digital and print platforms.
- Work alongside journalists to translate complex news stories into engaging visual formats.
- Produce visual content that resonates with Malay-speaking audiences across various topics, including community affairs, current issues, lifestyle, and commentary.
- Develop and lead your own visual-first stories, including explainer videos, social content, and editorial art pieces.
- Stay ahead of visual trends and platforms to ensure Berita Harian’s visuals remain fresh and relevant.
- Ensure visuals are brand-aligned, culturally sensitive, and platform-appropriate (especially for Instagram, TikTok, and website).
- Work independently with minimal supervision, from ideation to execution.
Required Qualifications
- A diploma or degree in a relevant field.
- Proficiency in design and video tools: Adobe Creative Suite (especially Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere Pro), Figma, or equivalents.
- Strong storytelling instincts and an understanding of news values.
- Effectively bilingual in the english and malay language, in writing and speaking.
- A solid portfolio showcasing both visual art and journalistic thinking.
- Excellent time management and ability to handle multiple deadlines.
- Self-starter attitude — comfortable owning and driving projects independently.
- Proven experience in journalism, illustration, and motion graphics — ideally in a newsroom or editorial setting will be advantageous.
- Bonus if you have experience with data visualisation, social-first content, or interactive graphics.
